Our Second Austrian Container of 2009 Has Arrived! Dozens of New Wines & New Vintages!

We now have in stock some of the finest tasting Austrian wines to date. Although 2008 had some weather challenges in a number of regions, I am happy to report that quality for the white wines in 2008 is as good as the excellent 2007's,and even better in some cases, although yields were a lot less. The 2007 reds we tasted from barrel will be world class, and the 2006 reds in bottle are the best Austrian reds I've tasted to date.

During our wine buying tour in January 2009, we were able to meet and sample wines with Anton Bauer, Ernst Steindorfer, Werner Michlits, Leo Hillinger, Martin Mittelbach, Karl Steininger & family, and Gustav Strauss. We even discovered a few new producers including Franz Netzl in Carnuntum, whose family produces serious reds full of fruit & spice, and Paul Direder in Burgendland (only 18 years old!), who produces absolutely delicious Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt in one liter bottles for only $9.99!

Regarding price, although there will be less wine to sell from 2008, the weakening euro and drop in gas prices should keep prices even with last year, and in some cases we have negotiated a price drop. We have the largest selection of Austrian wines in NC, at prices well below the national retail average, so stop by and let us introduce you to the wide range of these fine high quality wines!

New Austrian Wines & Vintages In Stock Now

Paul D. Grüner Veltliner 2008, 1 liter ($9.99) – Golden straw color with delightfully perfume & bright spice aromas, surprisingly ripe Grüner varietal flavors, crisp spicy fruit and a full yet dry finish. Very clean & fresh, this is a great party wine and an awesome value of liter bottles.

Paul D. Zweigelt 2007, 1 liter ($9.99) – Another impressive value from our new young winemaker, Paul Direder. Very aromatic with lively violet and red raspberry aromas, soft jammy red berry fruit up front and a lush mid-palate of fresh prickly berry fruit. Very clean, spicy and pure with fresh acidity through the finish. Reminiscent of a young Cru Beaujolais, only with more fruit and tannins. This would make a great house red with your favorite comfort foods including meatloaf, spaghetti and casseroles, or bring a bottle to your next party and turn your friends onto the new wave of Austrian wine.

Michlits Frizzante Pinot Noir Rosé 2007 ($15.99) – Juicy, fresh & fruity with a pure expression of Pinot Noir. Mouthfilling Cremant-like bubbles are lively yet soft, allowing the delicate red berry flavors to shine through to the clean lively finish. Perfect on its own or a delicious complement to light hors d’oeuvre or Sunday brunch.

Michlits Burgenland White 2008 ($13.99) – Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling and Muscat all farmed strictly bio-dynamic. Focused minerality with soft floral aromas, round fruit in mid-palate and hints of orange zest and apple on the clean finish. Try it with mild cheeses, chicken or simple cream sauces.

Michlits Pinot Gris “Graupert” 2008 ($17.99) – This vineyard site (at right) takes bio-dynamic farming to a whole new level. The winemaker believes that by not pruning the vines at all, the grapes will be allowed to grow as Mother Nature intended and the fruit produced will be more expressive of the vineyard site and soil. This wine is like a Pinot Grigio on steroids; highly perfumed aromas of flowers & stone fruits, bright mineral & citrus backbone with a full fruit mid-palate and round lingering finish. Great with scampi and spicy pasta dishes with garlic or cream sauces.

Michlits Burgenland Red 2008 ($13.99) – Fresh & fruity with youthful red berry & cherry fruit, soft spice notes and a jammy yet dry finish. A good house red to enjoy with comfort foods, burgers or pizza.

Michlits Pinot Noir 2007 ($17.99) – Deep garnet color and a broad palate of black cherry/red berry fruit. Firm spice and structure balanced with ripe fruit make this an excellent Pinot Noir value. Enjoy with duck, pork, grilled sausages or wild mushroom risotto.

Micklits Blaufrankisch 2007 ($19.99) – Deep purple hue with juicy ripe blueberry fruit, smoke and vanilla notes, soft tannins and a round silky finish. A full-bodied yet soft red to enjoy on its own or with ham, pork tenderloin or grilled kabobs. This is one of the most interesting Austrian red wines I have tasted this year.

Steindorfer Grauburgunder Pinot Gris 2008 ($16.99) – Fermented in 80% stainless and 20% French oak to achieve a balance of crisp acidity and complexity. Beautiful aromas of stone fruits, fresh butter a touch of smoke leading to a full palate with clean minerality, tropical notes and a long crisp finish. More Oregon in style than Italy, yet I have not tasted any domestic Pinot Gris this good. Try it with bacon wrapped scallops or fleshy fish like Mahi and Halibut.

Steindorfer St. Laurent Reserve 2007 ($25.99) – Very dark, almost port-like in color, with open knit red currant & black cherry fruit laced with licorice & baking spice. Full yet elegant with a firm backbone and a long smooth finish. A fine companion to duck, pork and cassoulet.

Steindorfer Merlot STE Grand Reserve ($28.99) – Holy cow! This is one of THE BEST Merlots I have tasted in years, and it is the highest scored red wine I sampled in Austria this year. Aged in new French oak for 14 months, it is dark crimson in color with piercing aromas of ripe black berry fruit, richly concentrated currant & black cherry fruit, very fine tannins, beautiful integration of oak & spice and super long velvety finish. I can’t think of a food pairing that would do this extraordinary wine justice.

Hillinger Secco Pinot Noir 2008 ($19.99) – Delicate strawberry aromas lead to fresh red berry fruit flavors, persistent but not intense bubbles and a crisp dry lingering finish. Fun & affordable party sparkler!

Hillinger Pinot Grigio 2008 ($12.99) – Light straw hues with melon & tangerine aromas. Crisp mineral fruit flavors accented with citrus on the clean bright finish. More personality and liveliness than most Italian Pinot Grigio on the market today.

Hillinger Small Hill White 2008 ($15.99) – Fresh & floral blend of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscateller with apple/pear fruit, firm acidity and lemony citrus on the dry finish. A solid house style to serve with chicken, shellfish and light pastas.

Hillinger Small Hill Red 2007 ($15.99) – An easy drinking blend of Pinot Noir, St. Laurent and Merlot with aromas of violets and blueberries, round red currants & spice flavors, and a soft lingering finish.

Hillinger Zweigelt 2007 – Textbook Zweigelt with dark plum color, red raspberry, currant and red licorice notes, medium body with a firm backbone of tannin and dark spice on the full finish. Very food friendly and will pair well with pork, grilled meats or vegetables and red sauces.

Hillinger Pinot Noir “Eveline” 2005 ($19.99) – Classic new world style Pinot with red cherry aromas, red berry & cherry flavors intertwined with vanilla & spice, fine weight and balance, and a smooth polished fruit finish. This gives our domestic Pinots a run for their money.

Tegernseerhof Zweigelt Rosé 2008 ($12.99) – Another amazing effort by Martin Mittelbach. Brilliant, almost neon pinkish color. Fresh red berry aroma burst from the glass, with round strawberry/red raspberry flavors, full texture and richness yet finishes delightfully dry & crisp. Rosé does not get any better than this from any region or winemaker.

Tegernseerhof Grüner Veltliner T26 2008 ($14.99) – Martin’s entry level Grüner is better than many producers’ “Reserve” bottlings. Expansive apple fruit with firm white pepper spice, pure minerality, and a finish which seems to dance in your mouth. Get your schnitzel on.

Tegernseerhof Riesling Loibenberg 2007 – Ripe stone fruit aromas lead to an expansive apricot & white peach fruit palate with wet slate mineral tones and a rich full-bodied fruit finish, yet dry like a Halbtrocken Spätlese. This is a big food friendly Riesling to enjoy with spicy curry or stir fry dishes.

Tegernseerhof Riesling Terrassen 2006 ($23.99) – Delicately floral & perfumed aromas with focused pear & apple fruit, mineral slate and a firm core acidity through the finish.  Textbook style Wachau Riesing.

Tegernseerhof Riesling Kellerberg 2006 ($34.99) - One of our favorite Rieslings from any region. Lots of honeysuckle and floral notes with a tinge of tangerine. Interesting mineral/flinty notes wrapped with mango, kiwi and citrus flavors leading to a firm full yet dry finish. A solid core of flavor from start to finish.

Tegernseerhof Riesling Steinertal 2007 ($25.99) – A powerful, deeply textured Riesling with intense apricot, white peach, honey aromas & flavors layered in flinty minerals and slate. Built with a broad spectrum of fruit flavors and a firm spine of fresh acidity and spice. This wine shows the full potential of world class Riesling.

Bauer Pinot Grigio 2008 – A crowd-pleasing style with clean, soft apple/pear aromas & flavors, a touch of almond & mineral fruit with lively acid and a dry fresh finish. Tastes more Italian than most Italian Pinot Grigio. Serve with simple hors d’ouevres, light cream sauces or shellfish.

Bauer Rosé Zweigelt 2008 – We thought we might have topped out on the number of Rosé's for the store, but after we tried Tony Bauer's, we just had to make room for one more. It has a deep rich color with very expressive, floral notes and round, red berry fruit flavors. The finish is fresh and long with more body and complexity than many Rosé's. It is perfect with roasted vegetables and grilled fish or pork.

Bauer Riesling Berg 2008 – Pure, crystalline apple & pear fruit shine through from the aromas to the finish. Has just enough fruit to fill your mouth, and just enough fresh acidity to hold it all together. Excellent example of just how good a dry Riesling can be. Enjoy with quiche, chicken salad or grilled fish with spicy fruit salsa.

Bauer Gmörk Grüner Veltliner 2008 ($11.99/750ml and $18.99/magnum) – Pure & focused spicy aromas, very aromatic and precise ripe apple flavors and tangy citrus/lime notes on the crisp finish. Excellent expression of the grape, and a real deal for such a high quality single vineyard Grüner. Pair with a wide range of foods including chicken, ham, light pastas, grilled vegetables or simply serve as a refreshing aperitif. Also available in magnums!

Bauer Rosenberg Grüner Veltliner 2008 ($16.99) – Ripe varietal fruit aromas with a touch of tropical fruit, lemon citrus acidity, fresh white pepper overtones, layered fruit on the palate and an elegant yet full finish. The richness and intensity of this wine for the money are amazing. Try it with seared scallops, plump crabcakes or roasted pork loin.

Bauer Grüner Veltliner Grande Reserve 2007 ($39.99) – Close your eyes and you’d swear you’re drinking a fine Meursault. Rich aromas of ripe melon, mango and vanilla oak lead to deeply textured tropical fruit, spicy oak and a fine thread of fresh acidity through the very long full bodied finish. This is a powerful wine beautifully crafted with a deft touch, and a style of Grüner most winemakers cannot achieve.

Bauer Wagram Cuvee 12, 2006 ($19.99) - One of the best red blends we tasted in Austria this year. Rich spicy blend of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, Cabernet & Merlot with crushed dark berry fruit, excellent integration of spice and silky tannins and a round full finish laced with currant fruit and dark spice. Great balance and fun to drink. Pair it with game, spicy red sauces, grilled meats and earthy root vegetables. Very much like full-bodied Cotes-du-Rhone in style.

Bauer Wagram Pinot Noir 2006 ($15.99) – An excellent value in Pinot Noir. Very perfumed with violets and black cherry fruit, soft tannins and a dusting of dark spice, with a touch of toasted oak on the smooth easy finish. Try it with grilled tuna or salmon, light red sauces, spicy sausages or pork tenderloin.

Steininger Young 2008 ($10.99) – A fresh, soft fruit driven blend of Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscateller with floral aromatics, bright citrus/tangerine fruit and a clean crisp finish. Delicious warm weather aperitif to enjoy with friends on the patio or at the beach.

Steininger Grünschnabel Grüner Veltliner 2008 ($12.99) – We liked this wine so much, we bought the entire U.S. allocation and split it with our friends at Asheville Wine Market, so the only other place you can find this wine is in Langenlois, Austria. Very spicy, floral aromas with white peppery spice, juicy lime/citrus fruit and a firm spicy finish. This is a classical style Grüner that will complement fleshy grilled fish, briny shellfish, fried chicken and of course, schnitzel!

Steininger Loisium Weingarten Grüner Veltliner 2007 ($19.99) – This stylish, single vineyard offering has a firm backbone of bright acidity, fresh tangerine/peach fruit and a complex minerality that blankets your palate. To maintain its purity, this bottling features the new European resealable glass enclosure. Pair with hors d’ouvres, pan-seared fish, scallops, or crab cakes.

Steininger Kittmansberg Grüner Veltliner 2007 ($27.99) – This has been my favorite Grüner Veltliner tasted at the estate for three years running, and hopefully we will get some this year because the winery always sells out before it is bottled. Richly fruited aromas of kiwi, lime and mango, with layers of peppery spice & tropical fruit wrapped around a core of firm acidity. Complex and nicely textured, it will stand up to game birds, pork and even red meats, but wonderful to sip on its own.

Steininger Grand Grü Grüner Veltliner 2007 ($24.99) – Lush tropical fruit aromas & flavors of mango, kiwi and tangerine, round expansive palate, good complexity and crisp acidity with mineral & stone fruit notes on the long lingering finish. Try it with roasted pork, grilled bacon wrapped scallops, steamed dumplings or creamy risotto.

Steininger Riesling Sekt 2006 ($25.99) – Beautiful aromas of flowers & perfume, firm effervescence, crisp ripe apple & pear fruit with very clean and pure citrus on the dry lingering finish. A refreshing alternative to French Champagne.

Steininger Riesling Kabinett 2007 ($19.99) – Excellent value for such a high quality Riesling. Wild flower & honey blossom aromas rich ripe peach and apple fruit, stony mineral notes, slate and fresh peach/apricot flavors on the clean focused finish. Enjoy with fresh fruit, crusty bread and your favorite cheeses, or sliced meats and cold salads.

Strauss Sämling 2008 ($12.99) - Here's something very different made from 100% Scheurebe. As soon as the cork is pulled, rich aromas of peaches and wild flowers leap out of the bottle (watch out) and fill the room, leading to ripe peach and stone fruit flavors, excellent acid structure and a full dry finish. This is a unique wine to experience, especially if you're a fan of Viognier or other "alternative" varietals (not that there's anything wrong with that). This could be the perfect sushi wine.
