Waterbrook Chardonnay, Columbia Valley ($14.99/ $13.49/ $10.49) -
The relatively cool climate of the Columbia Valley helps Waterbrook
create a Chardonnay that is clean, invigorating and lively on the palate
with juicy pear and peach fruit persisting through the finish.
Bauer Pinot Noir; Wagram, Austria ($15.99/ $14.39/ $11.99) -
Pinot Noir from Austria! Fourth generation wine maker Anton Bauer, uses
Germanic Pinot Noir clones and ages it for 20 months in small French oak
barrels. This produces a delicate Pinot with great depth.A typical
Burgundian nose with strawberries, raspberries and floral notes such as
violets. On the palate, the wine and has a long finish tasting of soft
red berries.
Grande Cassagne Rosé, Costières
de Nîmes ($9.99/ $8.99/ $7.49) - From the western edge of the Rhône
Valley where the locals drink Rosé with breakfast, lunch, dinner and
everything in between, especially in the warmth of the summer months. A
blend of 60% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre sourced from
forty-plus year old vines. It exudes bright red fruits and a strawberry
perfume. Fermented a short time on its skins, it retains an electric
pink color, soaring aromatics, and a fresh, dry finish.
Bricco del Sole Chardonnay; Langhe,
Italy ($15.99/ $14.39/ $11.24) - Fresh, clean, light style; the
complete antithesis to classic California Chardonnay. Sunny fruit shines
through this unoaked wine, and is balanced by a bright acidity. Try this
with homemade pasta or vegetable casserole.
Steindorfer Grauburgunder Pinot Gris;
Burgenland, Austria ($16.99/ $15.29/ $12.74) - Fermented in
80% stainless and 20% French oak to achieve a balance of crisp acidity
and complexity. Beautiful aromas of stone fruits, fresh butter a touch
of smoke leading to a full palate with clean minerality, tropical notes
and a long crisp finish. More Oregon in style than Italy, yet I have not
tasted any domestic Pinot Gris this good. Try it with bacon wrapped
scallops or fleshy fish like Mahi and Halibut.
Joseph Drouhin Pinot Noir "Laforet",
Burgundy ($17.99/ $16.19/ $13.49) - This is a really wonderful,
European-styled Pinot Noir. Bright notes of strawberry upfront with a
layering of deep cherry and subtle spice throughout. If you're looking
for a great wine to pair with salmon, chicken or pork, then this is a
great match.
Tegernseerhof Riesling "Terrassen",
Austria ($23.99/ $21.59/ $17.99) - From the hills of the Wachau
overlooking the Danube comes this outstanding Riesling. Delicate yet
complex aromas of crisp apples and peaches leap from the glass and lead
to a bright, dry and lengthy finish. Try this wine and find out why
Riesling is considered by many to be the most noble of all grape
varietals.
Coloma Garnacha Roja, Spain ($9.99/
$8.99/ $7.49) - Bodegas Coloma's flamboyant Granacha Roja is replete
with aromas and flavors of Framboise, juicy cherry fruit, and spice. Its
ripe flavors, jamminess, and soft peppery spice would pair wonderfully
with pan-seared duck breast, roasted meats or savory paella.
Hillinger Pinot Grigio, Burgenland
($12.99/ $11.69/ $9.74) - Light straw hues with melon & tangerine
aromas. Crisp mineral fruit flavors accented with citrus on the clean
bright finish. More personality and liveliness than most Italian Pinot
Grigio on the market today.
Star Tree Cabernet; Western Cape, South
Africa ($7.99/ $7.19/ $5.99) - South African wine has come a long
way as of late showing us fantastic wines and great values sure as
Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti. Jam packed with dark
fruit flavors accented with subtle notes of herbs, terroir and ripe
tannins for a complexity that belies the price. Better hurry, while this
great value is waiting here for you.
Joseph Schmid Cuvée Pepino; Kremstal,
Austria
($14.99/ $13.49/ $11.24) - Joseph Schmid's winery just outside the
beautiful and hospitable town of Krems, one of the oldest wine towns of
Austria, has been in family for over 150 years. His Cuvée Pepino is a
crisp blend of Grüner Veltliner, Muscateller and Chardonnay with green
apple, peach and grapefruit flavors. White pepper and spice linger on
the lengthy finish. A great wine for creamy cheeses or stir-fries with
spice.
Leverano Bianco, Italy ($8.99/
$8.09/ $6.74) - The town of Leverano, from which the wine takes its
name, is situated in the southern part of the Salento on the heal of
Italy's boot. Made predominantly from the indigenous Malvasia Bianca
grape, it is features delicately fresh and soft tropical fruit aromas
accented with citrus flavors paired to a crisp clean finish. A great
quaffing wine that is also a perfect match for light pastas or steamed
shellfish.
Coastal Vines Chardonnay, California
($6.99/ $6.29/ $5.24) - Tropical and orchard fruits mingle with just a
kiss of vanilla scented oak in this great value California Chardonnay.
The winemakers at Coastal Vines are careful not to overplay the oak
flavors to craft a crowd pleasing style that is not bereft of character.
Ca'Brigiano Montepulciano d'Abruzzo,
Italy ($7.99/ $7.19/ $5.99) - "The craving for cheap wines may be
surging, but merely cheap is no bargain. What’s needed are wines that
obey the dictates of the dwindling bank account while satisfying the
craving for reliable refreshment and restoration, and even piquing the
interest a bit. That’s where Montepulciano d’Abruzzo comes in."
The New York Times, October 29, 2008
Michlits Rosé Frizzante Pinot Noir;
Burgenland, Austria ($15.99/ $14.39/ $11.24) - Juicy, fresh &
fruity with a pure expression of Pinot Noir. Mouthfilling Cremant-like
bubbles are lively yet soft, allowing the delicate red berry flavors to
shine through to the clean lively finish. Perfect on its own or a
delicious complement to light hors d’oeuvre or Sunday brunch.
Coastal Vines Pinot Grigio, California
($6.99/ $6.29/ $5.24) - The folks at Coastal Vines have done it again
with their easy going style of Pinot Grigio. Delicate aromas and flavors
of subtle citrus and melon fruit leads to a fresh and clean finish. A
wonderfully quaffable wine that that doesn't require food to be enjoyed.
Ca'Brigiano Merlot; Veneto, Italy
($7.99/ $7.19/ $5.99) - Merlot is widely grown around Italy, and while
many Italian regions have recently incorporated Merlot in an imitation
of the Super Tuscan movement, northeastern Italy has actually been
working with the varietal for the better part of the last century.
Reminiscent of a 'baby Bordeaux' with a complexity that belies its
bargain price, this would be a great match for full-flavored foods like
grilled pizza, hearty poultry, barbequed meat dishes.
Steininger "Steven Holl" Grüner
Veltliner; Langenlois, Austria ($19.99/ $17.99/ $14.99) - This
stylish, single vineyard offering has a firm backbone of bright acidity,
fresh tangerine/peach fruit and a complex minerality that blankets your
palate. To maintain its purity, this bottling features the new European
resealable glass enclosure. Pair with hors d’ouvres, pan-seared fish,
scallops, or crab cakes.
Renaud Pouilly Fuisse Vieilles Vignes
($22.99/ $20.69/ $17.24) - Beautifully balanced old vine Chardonnay from
the estate of Pascal Renaud. Ripe orchard fruit balanced with crisp
acidity and pleasant mineral/slate notes followed by a full citrus
finish. Serve with crab, scallops, poultry and firm cheeses.
Alcesti Bianco, Sicily - This blend
of three indiginous varietals; Grecanico, Catarratto and Ansonica; is
fermented in stainless steel to help maintain its fresh personality.
Bright and lively with some zesty minerality, this Bianco makes for a
nice change from summer’s "golden boy," Pinot Grigio, for porch sitting
or for pairing with light and simple fare.
Bauer Pinot Grigio; Wagram, Austria
($12.99/ $11.69/ $9.74) - We proudly take some credit for this wine -
after visiting us in the heat of summer in North Carolina, Tony Bauer
added this perfect summer wine to his portfolio. A crowd-pleasing style
of Pinot Grigio with clean, soft apple / pear aromas & flavors, a touch
of almondy mineral fruit accented with a dry and lively finish. Tastes
more Italian than most Italian Pinot Grigio. Serve with simple hors
d’ouevres, light cream sauces or shellfish.
Coastal Vines Pinot Noir, California
($6.99/ $6.29/ $5.24) - It is almost unheard of to find Pinot Noir at
such a low price point that tastes like, well, Pinot Noir. Enter the
Coastal Vines with it's light and easy-drinking style featuring classic
Pinot Noir aromas and flavors of fresh cherries paired to a smooth
finish. At this price you can finally serve Pinot Noir at your next
party or enjoy it at home with pork, poultry or seafood.
Ca'Brigiano Chardonnay; Veneto, Italy
($7.99/ $7.19/ $5.99) - Unlike some regions of Italy that specialize in
producing just a couple of grape varietals, the Veneto region in the
northeast produces a vast array of wines from classically Italian grapes
as well as more international examples such as this Chardonnay. Unoaked
with fresh and delicate tropical flavors paired to a bright refreshing
finish, this is worlds away from the heavily oaked Chardonnays that are
often produced in California.
Hillinger Secco, Austria ($15.99/
$14.39/ $11.24) - 100% Pinot Noir crafted into a sparkling wine made in
the Prosecco style, with delicate aromas of fresh strawberries and red
berries which follow through on the palate. The flavors are beautifully
balanced with a vibrant and refreshingly dry finish. Beautiful color and
package. Make any day a celebration!
Coastal Vines Cabernet, California
($6.99/ $6.29/ $5.24) - This medium-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon is flush
with dark plummy fruits and a lengthy finish featuring silky, smooth
tannins. An outstanding value that is equally fitting at the dinner
table, for cocktails or at your next gathering.
Michlits Pinot Noir; Burgenland, Austria
($17.99/ $16.19/ $13.49) - This certified organic Pinot I deep garnet
color and a broad palate of black cherry/red berry fruit. Firm spice and
structure balanced with ripe fruit make this an excellent Pinot Noir
value. Enjoy with duck, pork, grilled sausages or wild mushroom risotto.
Farnese Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 1.5
liter Magnum ($19.99/ $17.99/ $14.99 magnum) - This is best the
Montepulciano for the money that we've had in many years and it’s now
available in the even more value oriented Magnum sized. Farnese does a
beautiful job of providing a nice core of fruit without sacrificing its
Tuscan flair. Nice dark fruit and lots of complexity. Pair it with
grilled pork, spicy sausages and hearty pastas. Exceptional value!
