Spotlight On Italian Dolcetto

Dolcetto is Piedmont's most attractive, ready to drink red wine. It's very perfumed with medium to full body ripe berry flavors and light tannins. they are a great match for lighter meats, poultry, grilled fish, vegetarian and pasta dishes. Here are some of our favorites:

Marcarini Dolcetto d'Alba "Boschi di Berri" 2001 ($25.99) - Very full-bodied, intense and concentrated, this is Dolcetto on steroids. Only 125 cases are produced annually from 150 year old pre-phylloxera vines.

Conterno Fantino Docetto d'Alba "Bricco Bastia" 2002 ($18.99) - A rich, highly extracted version of Dolcetto which merits serious attention. This is a pure, smooth expression of dark berry fruit and soft spice.

Luigi Einandi Dolcetto di Dogliani Vigna Tecc 2001 ($22.99) - Considered by most Italians to be the birthplace of Dolcetto, the wines from Dogliani are not widely exported due to the demand within their own market. Hard to find, but very easy and enjoyable to drink.

Other Fine Dolcettos In Stock Now:

Varaldo Dolcetto 2001 ($11.99) - A solid value.
Vajra Coste & Fossati Dolcetto 2000 ($19.99) - Full flavored and smooth.
Cantina del Piro Dolcetto 2001 ($17.50) - Juicy red berry/blueberry fruit and soft tannins.
Peccenino "Siri d' Jermu" Dolcetto di Dogliani 2000 ($29.99) - Densely packed with dark berry fruit and layers of spice.

Cellar Alert!

We have just received a very small allocation from Vinos de Benjamin Romeo, one of the most prestigious bodegas in Rioja, Spain. Only 200 bottles of each of the following wines were imported into the U.S., and we are one of only two retailers in North Carolina to received an allocation. The 2001's have not been reviewed yet, but the 2000's scored "Outstanding" to "Extraordinary" from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, and it is generally agreed that 2001 is a superior vintage in Rioja. There are less than a case of each of these available at this time.

La Cueva del Contador Rioja 2001 ($75.00 net) - 100% Tempranillo bottled unfiltered. This is the "second Label" of Contador listed below.

Contador Rioja 2001 ($259.00 net) - This is a no holes barred effort from the former winemaker at Artadi, made from100% old vine Tempranillo grown on very low yielding hillside vineyards. Said Robert Parker of the 2000 vintage: "If you can get your hands on a bottle of this, you will have something bordering on perfection." Here's your chance.

La Vina de Andres Romeo Rioja 2001 ($119.00 net) - This is a single vineyard project from very old, painfully low yielding Tempranillo vines. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, it won't peak for another 20 years.

New Additions To Our Red Tag Sale

Here are some more wines recently added to our 20% Red Tag Sale, where solid case purchases are discounted 20% off the bottle price. These are great crowd-pleasing wines, perfect for parties or everyday enjoyment, so stock up now while they are on sale! We currently have over 150  wines that are discounted 20% when purchased by the matched case (12 bottles), and we update our selections weekly based on availability.

The wines we have selected are perfect for parties, gift giving and cellar stocking. They are marked with red tags throughout the store and represent just a small percentage of our impressive selection of over 2000  fine wines from around the world. The first amount is the regular bottle price, and the second is our discounted bottle price when purchased by the case:

Domaine du Tot Chablis 2001 ($14.99/$11.99) - A full-flavored style with pure mineral/citrus fruit and a fresh brilliant finish. This is a classic example of Chablis with no oak influence. This wine is a perfect match for fresh oysters, clams and crab, or enjoy on a hot day as a refreshing aperitif. Excellent value. We also have Domaine du Tot Fourcharme 2001 and Vaillons 2001, which are both spectacular values in Premier Cru Chablis.

Domaine de L'Arjolle "Equinox" 2001 ($14.99/$11.99) - One of our favorite fall white wines skillfully blended with Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat. The brief oak aging lends richness and complexity which perfectly balances the Sauvignon's crisp acidity, the Viognier's piercing aromatics and the Muscat's opulent fruit. Enjoy with mild cheeses, shellfish, chicken and grilled vegetables.

Chateau Roubaud Rose 2002, Costieres de Nimes ($9.99/$7.99) - Yes, we love Rose at Seaboard! Luscious blend of Syrah and Grenache with rich ruby color, full-bodied yet dry with ripe red fruit and a hint of spice. Reminiscent of a red wine but refreshing like a white. Very versatile; will stand up to pork, smoked ham and grilled fish

Feuille de Garance Cotes du Rhone 2001 ($10.99/$8.79) - A gorgeous blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Cinsault and 15% Syrah fermented in stainless and minimal oak treatment to preserve the fresh fruit characteristics. It shows deep berry fruit with some dark spice notes, good complexity and a firm rich finish. Lots of guts for a little price. Enjoy with grilled meats and rich red sauces.

Chateau Courac "Laudun" Cotes du Rhone Villages 2000 ($11.99/$9.60) - Classic Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre blend with beautiful deep garnet color. This wine gushes ripe Grenache fruit; it's fat, viscous and layered with a bit of a rustic edge with lends complexity and depth. Try it with wild game or a standing rib roast. Amazing quality for the price.

Domaine Montlobre "Les Bois" 2000 ($9.99/$7.99) - One of our favorite new wines from Languedoc. Mouthfilling blend of Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah and Grenache loaded with dense blackberry/black cherry fruit and a hint of crystallized violets. Juicy with a round lively finish. Fun to drink on its own or enjoy with your favorite comfort cuisine.

Chateau de Fronsac Bordeaux 2000 ($19.99/$15.99) - This estate has been making wine since the reign of Charlemagne. A stylish blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc aged 12 months in French and American oak with brilliant dark ruby color and smoky rich berry aromas. Very plump with layers of ripe red berry fruit and a core of spice and youthful tannins. Enjoyable now, and will continue to evolve for 5-7+ years. Only 500 cases produced. Excellent value for a petit chateau.

Chateau Panchille Cuvee Alix 2000 ($14.99/$11.99) - An intense blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet and 10% Cabernet Franc framed in generous oak with lush boysenberry/blackberry fruit, heady toasty oak and full creamy texture. This is "Bordeaux meets Napa" in a bottle. Enjoy with roasts and thick steaks. Great value.

Massane Merlot 2001, Languedoc ($7.99/$6.40) - Amazing body and texture for the price with soft tannins, round plummy fruit and a touch of dark spice. A good party wine to serve with heavy hors d'oeuvres or casual dinners with simple comfort foods.
